What The Batch Number On A Bottle Is For

The least interesting text on a supplement label is the one that matters if something goes wrong.

What it identifies

A batch or lot number identifies one specific production run: a particular set of raw material, mixed and filled on particular equipment on a particular day. Every bottle from that run carries the same code.

Behind that code, a properly run facility holds records. Where each ingredient came from, what the incoming testing showed, what the machines were set to, what the finished product tested at, and where the bottles were shipped.

Why it exists

Traceability. If a raw material supplier later reports a problem, the manufacturer can work out exactly which runs used that material and exactly which bottles went where. Without batch coding, a problem with one ingredient delivery becomes a problem with every bottle ever made.

It also works in the other direction. If several people report the same reaction, the batch codes on their bottles are the first thing anybody investigating will ask for.

What to do with it

  • Photograph the label when a new bottle is opened, or at least keep the bottle until it is finished. The code is usually printed or stamped near the expiry date.
  • Quote it in any complaint. A message that includes a batch number gets a substantively different answer from one that does not.
  • Do not throw the empty away if you had a reaction. The bottle is the evidence.

How recalls actually work here

Most supplement recalls in the United States are voluntary. A company finds a problem, or is told about one, and withdraws the affected batches. The regulator can publicise it and can act if a company will not, but the first move is usually the company’s.

Recalls are announced by batch code. That is the only reason the code on your bottle is worth knowing: it is how you find out whether an announcement applies to the bottle in your cupboard or to a different run entirely.

Reporting a problem properly

Tell the seller, with the batch code. If the reaction was serious, report it to the FDA through MedWatch as well, again with the code. Telling only a website achieves nothing, because a website has no records and no obligation.
